Facebook Caution!
We now have four of our members on “Facebook.” Facebook is just about the same as “My Space,” but frequented by older people. Facebook is a “Social Networking” site that is used to communicate with your friends. Sounds good at first; but it can be dangerous!

I joined Facebook with the intent of locating Sachem Alumni! Facebook is not private by default; whatever you say to one member of your group is sent to everyone. I believe that it is possible to direct a message to only one person, but one must first figure out how to perform this operation. I may have figured out how to direct messages, but I am not sure if this procedure is actually working! Even if you figure out how to direct messages, one slip of the mouse, and everyone knows what you have just said!

By default, anyone listed as a friend in your personal profile, can also see everyone else that is listed. There are ways to limit that but I can’t figure it out! What if your activist academic friend, found out that you were also friends with the chairman of the Republican Party? Ice and Fire do not mix! Facebook may have a facility for multiple groups of friends, but I have not figure out if that is possible!

The people at Facebook are constantly trying to find friends for you, by getting the Password to your Email Account! If you give them the password to your Email Account, they will rummage through your Address Book, looking for people that also are members of Facebook. If anyone in your address book has a Facebook account, they could receive an invitation to become one of your friends! I did not have the desire or courage to give Facebook the password to my email account. Does anyone know if I would be given the opportunity to say "No" before invitations are sent out to people in my address book?

OK! The following is a fictitious scenario, used only as an illustration. You have in your Address Book, the following email listings who coincidentally, also have a Facebook Account:
1. The IRS Tax Auditor
2. The lawn service that does not pay taxes.
3. Your Wife.
4. The local Brothel.
5. Your children.
6. Your Priest or Minister.
7. Your mistress!
8. Ha! Ha! LOL LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

If you don’t know what you are doing, all of the above could inadvertently be registered as your friends. Oh well!

(3/22/2009 News Flash: Ive just learned that Facebook says that they will not store your email address or contact anyone, without your permission! Hum!!!! I would still feel a lot better if I spoke to someone who has actually gone through the process!)

I would bet that this problem would go away if Facebook added a line of text, below the "Find Friends" box that says:

By submitting your email password, we would only look through your address book for people that are eligible to join your group of friends. You will then be asked to select only those people that you want to receive an invitation to join your group. You have total control of who receives an invitation!

So everything that you type is seen by the entire group. Anything that any member of your group types, can be seen by the entire group! There are ways to limit visibility, but I feel that they are rather cryptic. I am not new to software, but I feel that it could take me a month to fully control Facebook!

I do not discourage anyone from joining Facebook; in fact, I believe that it can be fun! Please be mindful, as to who you invite, to join your group; that is, until you learn how to control FaceBook access.

I have heard of a person that was inadvertently exposed as a Bi-Sexual because of a mistake made using FaceBook.

OK! Please be careful! Facebook is a lot of fun, but it is also the same as the AT&T Party-lines, that we had in the 50s! Everyone knows all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PRIVATE MESSAGES! USE EMAIL.

Jerry Schmitt:
Just read your blog in the "Gazette". I'm glad you took me seriously and warning all to be cautious!

Art Schomber Located!
Hi,
I had a visit to my
classmates.com profile from Art Schomber (60). I've given him your e-mail and told him about the blog. I need to start keeping count of people who find my profile there. It's been great to link people up to all of us.

Judi ;)

Comment from Richard Williams:
Hi, y'all.
My cast is off! Art Schomber's father and my mother were cousins. Would love to make contact with him. He has a younger sister, Sandy, who dated my cousin, Eddie Cambria. Best to you. Richard Williams.

Comment from Joan Lalla Gerson:I also remember Art Schomber. His sister, Suzanne was one of my classmates and was in the picture that Fran Rodriguez had sent to the blog. I remember meeting Art at one of Suzanne's birthday parties in Holtsville. It is bringing back memories of all the basement and other parties that I attended when we were teenagers. Another birthday party was Mary Trapani's sweet 16. I remember her mother letting us make our own ice cream sundaes...... I guess I could go on and on.

From Judi Beldon Lloyd:
Hi,

The 3rd pic - of people at a dance of some sort - leftmost is Linda Belden and rightmost I believe is Pat Brida.

Judi ;)

Joan Lalla:

About the 3rd picture of Mary's Sweet Sixteen----The left most girl is Linda Belden, then, I think, Ralph Cuttone, me (Joanie Lalla), June Luckel, Curt Franck, Janet Bowers and lastly, I believe is Mary Trapani.

Reply from Ben Vitale:
Randi, Thanks for the invite! If it is the PJHS Class of 59 Reunion on September 12, 2009 I will be there; I am the DJ! I do not know all of the Students that transferred to Sachem at that time, so I have published your letter on this Blog.

Richard Williams and Patty Perkins attended PJHS. (See Prom Photos of Patty Perkins, below this article).

Please do send the photos; everyone in our group enjoys looking at them!

Thank You

Ben

Comment from Mike Mahoney:
Ben
I noticed all the activity recently from the Port Jeff side. Don't forget that a lot of us went to Sayville H. S. for our freshman year and then to Gatelot and finally Sachem.

Comment From Patty Perkins:

Oh, how sweet it was! Life was just so good. Do you feel any different now that you did then?? (Besides older and smarter!! lol)Do any of you know anything about these 2 men? I've heard rumors about Charlie (say it isn't so!) but no confirmation. Carmen was the Basketball star of Port Jeff. I have had no luck trying to find him.

Comment and Information from Gail Tierney Griffith:
Have you heard of any plans for a reunion? I'm not sure I'll make the trip, but 50 yeears is a real landmark. I wonder how many of us are left from the class of '59. Do you have any idea?

Gail Johnsen Holland's e-mail address is
(see the header of your email); She'll be glad to hear from you. She and Tony will be moving to a new home sometime soon. So, expect downtime while they pack and unpack.

Gail

You folks are not north enough. I've been living in Canada since 1971. Today's wind chill is -30C (I think that's about -22F). Just discovered this site.

Welcome back Mary!

Comment from Joan Lala Gerson:
Thanks, Ben, for your continued work on the blog site which continues to knit us Sachemites together. Sorry that it is so cold up there this year. You northerners definitely have to get south sometime this season. The weather here has been ideal since we returned from the Poconos in November. However, we did have 10 inches of snow in the Poconos in OCTOBER!

Comment from Marion Stewart Eskijian:
Yes, I am in touch with Gail. I got a Christmas message from her. She is moving, and her e-mail has changed. However, I don't have the new info on her yet. I will let you know if I hear from her again.

Comment from Barbara Deppe Schwinn:
So good we found another alumna; rather she found us. I now know where all of our email address are; easy!

Comment from Judi Belden Lloyd:
Hi Ben, did you get an e-mail address on Mary Trapani Haynes? I go to Toronto about 4 times a year - this year I'm bringing my family down to FL in Feb - My daughter was just remarking this morning on the -22. That's far too cold for me, thanks anyway.

Judi

(Mary Trapani's email address is in the header of the last email that I send to our group. The email address of every member of our group is in the header. You must click a switch to expose the full header. If you can't find it let me know and I will send it to you.

News From "Way Back Home" on Long Island!

*
After a Winter Storm here on Long Island the tide in
the Great South Bay is often higher than normal.

Marie and I often go for leisurely rides down Dune Road in Westhampton. We were wondering why we were the only car on Dune Road! Well Just about!!! Ha Ha, there were a few more "Four wheel drive nuts" on Dune Road, also driving through parts of the great South Bay. Many parts of the road were flooded! EEEkkk! Great fun! It's a shame that I left my Fishing Pole home!
*
We have our own Natural Zoo!
If you look carefully, along the Dune, you will see four Deer. This photo was taken on the eastern portion of Dune Road, just before the last Bridge to the mainland.

Photo Submitted by Tony and Betty Schloeh Bonicioli

Looks like Mrs. Hodel, on the right side of the photo, against the wall!
(Left Click on the photo to make it larger!)

Photo IDs by Richard Williams:
1. Mr. Putnam, shop; unidentified; Mr. Berger, Miss Mary Lou Cunningham, librarian; Mr Hubbard, truancy officer; Mrs Lantis, school secretary; background: Mrs Hodel, Mrs Packey, and Miss Carmen Del Moral (later Mrs Quinn), home econ/health; and Mr Spivak.

2. Mrs Wreck, nurse(?), Mr Rothenberg, Mrs Lntis, and Messrs Berger and Spivak. "Miss Del" went to Sayville HS with my brother, Doug, and Terry Duarte's brother, Oscar. She was my confidant and confessor and we remained friends after HS until I left for the Navy and the world. It isn't that my memory is so great. I had such a crazy time after my mother died that I spent much time in the company of these great folks. Miss Cunningham negotiated many a class suspension with my teachers (Mr. Brissom especially). Messrs Berger, Rothenberg, and Spivak for the moral, ethical and male guidance they so amply provided. Mr. Hubbard was the truancy officer so 'nuf saidHope today's teachers are as gifted and caring
Happy New Year!
Richard Williams

Reflections:
2. David Rothemburg: I remember Dave Rothenburg! Any student that was out of line, defiant, or that had excessive amounts of Testosterone in his body, ultimately found his way to Mr. Rothenburg's office! In our entire school I can recall only two students that fit the above profile! It was amazing to see how friendly, aggressive men could be, when they had to deal with Dave; Dave was a trained Boxer. I believe he was in the Golden Gloves!

4. Richard Berger: On my journey through life I have met one too many people that would say no to an issue, simply because they were empowered to say no; Mr. Berger was just the opposite! I can recall Mr. Berger, saying yes to an issue that most other people would have dismissed! It is amazing how the actions of one person, can effect the lives of others! Ben Vitale

5.

Reunion Proposal From Barbara Deppe Schwinn:
I go on many cruises around the world; extended cruises. Just came back from a 21 day cruise. I was wondering if maybe next year, we could do a cruise from New York on one of the Norwegian Cruise Ships; they go out every week from New York . They have free style cruising where you can eat any time or any place you want.
*
If we as a group should decide to go; I would give everyone the name of my Cruise Specialist Agent, and everyone will have to book individually. If I were to take care as a leader, I would have to sign papers that if someone doesn't pay, I will pay there bill.
*
This would be a nice Reunion Cruise for anyone that can make it. We can reserve on board for any special dinner arrangements we want. There is so much to do on a ship and they do have Sea Sick Pills for those that need them. Please think about it . The best time to go is May; before the hurricanes start.

Barbara Deppe Schwinn.

Comment from Ben Vitale:
Barbara
A short cruise might be a good idea! For sure; I won't be able to go because my wife Marie gets Sea Sick, very easily, even in a Car. You could imagine what would happen in a boat! Let's see what Our fellow Alumni think of the idea.

Comment From Brenda Sichenzia:

I will not go on that carrier. Had very unpleasant experience with them. Didn't care for them at all. Most of us have been at least once to the places they travel to and were hoping for something different in the way of a reunion.

Comment From Joan Lalla Gerson:
I like the idea of a cruise for the reunion because the last cruise was the ideal thing. It saved the organizers a lot of trouble and people were at their leisure to get together or go off on their own. Bill and Arlene did a great job. We got together for dinner every day to exchange stories and many met at a certain watering hole each afternoon. For someone like myself who is on a special diet, the variety of foods available on a cruise is a positive.

Joanie Lalla Gerson

Comment from Barbara Deppe Schwinn:

Hi Everyone

I read the comments and we can certainly decide as a group, which cruise line we go on; or "whatever we do." There are hopefully many comments to come . I thought we had to start thinking about our Reunion now; for the year 2009 is just around the corner. We can all contribute helpful suggestions.

Barbara

Comment From Chris (Parderlikes) Nunziato:

HI - I'm Chris (Parderlikes)Nunziato- class of '60- If there's a reunion of some kinds I would consider it--- please keep me informed--I don't know if I could do a cruise however I'm open for suggestions

Thanks guys.
