Is Facebook Your Resume?

I have been telling my grandchildren to be careful what they publish on Facebook. I have repeatedly told them that whatever they publish on their Facebook page could be used against them in later years. Did they listen? I don't think so!

As a test, I went to Facebook and looked up the name of a person that I went to Jr. High School with, over 50 years ago. I did not find my classmates profile, but I did find the profile of another young lady, who has the same name. I decided to see exactly how much information this person was sharing with the world; which includes me, a perfect stranger. I discovered that I had immediate access to this persons personal information. In just minutes I knew what University she attends, what state she lives in, what books she reads, what movies she like, what TV programs she looks at, and also had access to the names and photos of over 550 of her friends.

I have learned through the "Life School of Hard Knocks," one corollary of life, that stands above all others; do not give too much information! Did the above individuals give too much information? "You bet" they did! Who are they giving this information to? Everybody!

A valuable secret of salesmanship, is to force your potential customer to respond with the answer "yes," to your questions, as many times as possible, before you actually try to make the sale. This secret is also applicable to getting accepted to a college, and applying for a job. A customer, an employment officer, or a college admissions officer, is more likely to grant his approval, if you do not give him any opportunity to say "no." The multitude of information that is available on Facebook, other social media sites, and or Blogs, gives an employment officer many opportunities to say no! Most people simply give away, too much information!

I looked up yet another female on Facebook, who is a complete stranger to me and read the following: "I am not a Bitch; I just have a low tolerance for bullshit!" I read the following on another facebook site, "I'm very easy to get along with, and I'm the craziest person alive! I wonder if this public information will have any impact on a future employer's decision to hire these females? Humm...

The previous examples do indeed indicate that, the material you publish on Facebook and other Internet media, could be viewed by people that are considering and evaluating your Resume!

I believe that it is a good idea to re-evaluate your Facebook, and other social media account, privacy settings. I personally would not allow any of my information to be available to "Everyone." Facebook is not like a Blog where there is usually one author, and the author of the Blog, has control over its content. In the case of Facebook and other on-line media, one of your friends could publish something stupid, that could eventually come back to haunt you in the future.

Attack Terminated
by Google/ Blogger
Our Thanks to Blogger/ Google for stopping the attack on our "Sachem High School Alumni Gazette." As you can see on the graph of the weekly hits to our blog; the five days on the left side of the graph represent the attack to our Blog.  The last two days on the right show no trace of the attack.

If the attack had continued we could have been shut down. Everything is now A-OK.

From Brenda Sichenzia:
If the Long Islanders get together, put it in the Blog. I live in Pennsylvania, but I am very close to the New York border and it only takes about 2 hours to get to Lake Ronkonkoma. I have made several trips to visit friends from High School. At the last reunion, there was talk of another in 2012. Is that still in the works?

From Joan LaLa Gerson
Hi Ben,

Sorry to hear that your flight to Las Vegas was such a nightmare. It seems that the airlines are more and more out of touch with the needs of customers. The Southwest crew, however, has to be given credit for relaxing people with their sense of humor.

You may remember a conversation we had about cameras at the class reunion. My husband ended up getting the Nikon 3100 and Costco had the best price. So far, we think it's great. Thanks for your suggestions.

Florida weather has been great this season. No tornadoes or floods. We have two pools at the condo and we use them regularly. When I was in the Poconos last year, I learned to play Mah-Jongg and now I am teaching some people here. I started out with three people and now I have nine. Two people have vowed to get their own sets for next season. Did you know that men in China play Mah-Jongg for very high stakes? The other thing I do for fun is my music. In high school I was voted most musical in my class and I still love to get together with anyone who plays anything and jam.

Your article in the PATCH brought back memories of Patchogue. Anyone who lived in the Holtsville, Farmingville or Selden area knew about taking the bus to Patchogue. I used to meet my friend on the bus and for a quarter I could go into town. After an afternoon of shopping, it was possible to buy a slice of pizza for 15 cents!

Southwest Airlines Direct Flights

From Ben Vitale:

It was wonderful seeing all of you at the Reunion. I haven't written anything recently; what can I say after such an emotional experience.

OK! I'm still doing what I like to do "Blog." (The rare tropical disease Ha! Ha! It really does sound like a disease!)

I just wrote an article about Southwest Airlines Direct Flights, on an online Newspaper, called Patchogue Patch. Better be fast, "Patch" is not a Blog, and articles are eventually removed and replaced

(Left click the link below and read the article)

http://patchogue.patch.com/

When you finish reading the article, go to the upper right hand corner of the "Home Page," and do a "Mouse Over" on the text that says "Change Towns;" then left click "Sachem Patch." Sachem Patch contains all of the local news from the Sachem School District area. Why is it that Sachem Patch feels like home?

"Hey guys" it's getting warmer and those of you that still live on long Island should really get together at some restaurant/ night club, just to chat. Any Ideas? Please use the chat box below.

Hi Ben

I happened to find the reunion for Sachem Alumni as I googled my own name just out of curiosity..................I didn't know of the Sachem Alumni Gazette or Reunion...... Tony Perna was right. Tom and I live in Westhampton Dunes for the last 10 years...........we lived and raised our 2 daughters in the Village of Shoreham.

I taught K and 1st grade in SWR for 20+ years and Tom was Mayor and Trustee for over 20 years in the Village........I graduated in 1961....50 years ago........I was wondering if I would hear of a reunion......so I just found it online tonight...and it looked like FUN.......sorry I missed it!
