Sachem Class of 62 Reunion
Hi Ben, The answer about other classes attending, is this, this 50th reunion is for the class of 1962 only! Thank you for your updates. You may publish this in the blog. As I had mentioned, any reunions that would be planned after this 50th, I am sure other classes would be included?
Thank you,
Edna

From Deanna Mauch:
Hello All,
Since I live in Florida, the thought of a reunion here sounds wonderful. It would be interesting to know how many Sachem grads reside in the State of Florida, either all year or as "snow birds," as some are called. I would make the trip to Ocala. Bob and I are on the west coast in Sarasota (south of Ocala).
Does anyone know if the Class of 1963 has a 50th reunion plan?
From paradise,
Deanna

Info From Priscilla Second Reunion:
Hi, I made a comment last week regarding the second reunion that is hopefully happening next year in Oct/Nov time frame. I asked if anyone has any suggestions. The location for the reunion is in Ocala, Florida -- horse country!
Thanks,
Priscilla

Recently I have been looking at less and less TV .Life does indeed provide a multitude of negative things; and all of them are "free of charge." Too many negative things on TV do indeed have a detrimental effect on our well being! I have once again started to lean toward something which has given me enjoyment; music. Please left click the link to the YouTube video. I did not get upset once; in fact it brought a smile to my face! Enjoy!

From Judi Belden Lloyd:
Have you heard anything on the reunion that the two men from the class of 62 were going to take on? Is this the one? For some reason I thought that they were from FL. Plus this one specifically mentions 1962, not the 5 classes (59-63).

News From Back Home on Long Island Saturday evening and the gang is back on Cupsogue Beach. I know a few of our Sachem alumni were big fans of Cupsogue Beach in Westhampton. Everyone was drinking Margaretas and singing Margaretaville! For those of you that deserted Long Islend! "Its your own damned fault!" Ha!Ha!......
(Left click the photo to make it larger)
Yesterday they had a contest on Westhampton Beach. Sculptors competed against each other to see who was the greatest of all! I just love this one because I can connect with it! A Shark biting a boat! Hummmm.... I am a former boat owner, and I was "almost bit by a shark!" Now how can you almost be bitten by a shark? Welllll Its a long story. I will tell you the next time I see you! Its fun to tell Shark stories!!! Anyway this shark is about 18 feet long, and I could sware that he snapped his jaws as I walked nearby! Ha! Ha! If anyone knows the artist please let me know so that I could put his name on this photo.

We danced, sang, drank Margaretas, and watched the shark devour the boat! A great time was had by all!
Comment From Fern Spies:
Looks like you guys had a lot of fun! Sorry I missed it.

The Shark Sculpture is dear to my heart because I owned a boat. Screwed to the wall in my office is the actual hull of a genuine boat. This piece of art work which bears the title "Why I Sold my Boat," is a constant reminder to me, of the trials and tribulations of being a boat captain!
The two pieces of broken boat line are remnants of my own personal episodes of "Disaster at Sea." My son's boat broke loose on two separate occasions, during ferocious storms. Dad and his grandson had to rescue the boat in 90 Mile per hour winds, during a storm surge! Scared the hell out of me! I'm getting too old for this! Ha! Ha!
The piece of metal to the right of the Broken lines is the cleat from my boat that was literally torn off of my boat during a winter storm. It was this event that showed me that wet storage is not such a good idea!
Finally the jagged tears on the right hand side of the hull were caused by the jaws of a shark. The poor captain of this boat was attacked by a Sea Monster! So! You can see why I sold my boat! Ha! Ha!

From Gail Johnson Holland:
The two Gails had a wonderful visit in honour of their upcoming 70th birthdays. We had marathon yaking fests. We are fine and so are the husbands. We have very much enjoyed good health, happy retirement and good times.

Gail Tierney Griffith Visits Gail Johnson in London!
My husband Hoyt, our great niece AnnMarie, and I've just come back from two weeks in Dublin and London, with a lovely visit with Gail Johnsen and her husband Tony Holland sandwiched in between the two cities. Not only do Gail and I share our first names, but our birth month ~ November~ which we have been celebrating with cards and telephone calls for many years. We will be 70 shortly and it was my turn to visit. We made the most of the time catching up, especially chatting about those days at Sachem that brought us together and nurtured this lifetime friendship. A highlight of the visit was the chance to meet Gail's granddaughters, Destiny, Faith, and Hope ~ three delightful bundles of energy. The youngest, Hope, shares her grandmother's flair for the dramatic! It was Mrs. Johnsen who took Gail, her sister Judy, and lucky me to New York City to see our first Broadway show Pajama Game for our 15th birthdays. That kindness ignited a lifetime love of the theater in me. Now we are looking forward to Gail and Tony visiting us in Hendersonville, NC, sometime soon.

An Alumna's Solution to Budget Cuts
Sachem graduates have and continue to have a significant global impact on all levels of education and government.
Sachem alumna Mary Trapani Hynes graduated from Sachem High School in 1961, and continued her education at Harpur College (SUNY), in New York. Mrs. Hynes has for years been working as a teacher in Taranto Canada.
On Thursday July 28, 2011 Mary Trapani Hynes, spoke at the Mayor's Executive Committee forum, in an effort to stop budget cuts to the Taranto public library, and transportation systems. Mary skillfully used a unique combination of reverse psychology and sarcasm, which had a dramatic impact on the outcome of that meeting.
Please read the top link, which is a newspaper article, then view the lower link, which is a YouTube video. The video is absolutely fascinating!

Thank you Dennis, for sharing that beautiful video. I can't wait to get out to Long Island this week and go to the ocean. After your video, I am more determined than ever. The Poconos have been hot for the past week but I am loving it. The humidity is low and the house stays cool with all these trees around. But, being a Long Island girl, I miss the ocean.
Thanks again.

Montauk Point Beach
Videos From Home on Long Island
The heat has been horrible here on long Island. In an attempt to get some relief from the extremely hot temperatures, Marie and I went to Montauk Point. It was actually cool at the beach! The weather was overcast, so we were spared direct exposure to the sun. There was a slight cool breeze; wow, finally some relief!

Emotional Evening at Ronkonkoma Beach

What is currently known as Ronkonkoma Beach is in fact the former location of the Hollywood Beach Pavilion, Lake Ronkonkoma, NY. I, as a young man, patronized the Pavilion in the Fifties and Sixties.
History repeats itself, as my Daughter Carol, a member of the Ronkonkoma Chamber of Commerce, and owner of the "Liberty Tax Service," invites her parents to attend a Clam Bake/ BBQ, at the former location of the "Hollywood Beach Pavilion," now called "Ronkonkoma Beach."
A smile appeared on my daughters face when she realized that she had inadvertently invited her father to a treasured location of his youth. My daughter is too young to have seen the Pavilion, but she did see the glow on my face as I basked in the Sun on what I consider to be "Hallowed Ground." Actually the weather was overcast, with rain showers. I was unable to see the clouds or feel the rain, because the "Spirit of times past," would only allow me to see the sunshine, and feel the sand beneath my feet!
Surrounded by younger "Sachemites," a few of the attendees were wearing Red and Gold Sachem T - Shirts "How cool is that!" I actually met a Sachem Alumna from the class of 1967.
The actions of the "Spirit of times past," once again prodded me, in effect telling me that I should look around for more signs from my past. Yep! The spirit was right, the event was catered by none other than "Bruno's."
"Bruno's," has been and still is an integral part of Ronkonkoma culture and history. In the Sixties and Seventies everyone from my crowd "hung-out" at Bruno's. Reminiscent of the "English Pub," Bruno's has for decades functioned not only as a prominent pub, restaurant, and caterer; but also as the de facto social headquarters of Ronkonkoma.
The "Spirit of times past," has shown me that the wonderful people and places of Ronkonkoma have not changed, but continue to thrive!
My thanks to the Ronkonkoma Chamber of commerce, for having this wonderful event, on July 8, 2011. It appears that this event may be annual; where can I buy the tickets for next year's event?
